Big tables are where reservations most often go wrong: the number changes, half the party is late, and the restaurant guessed. Here's how to book a group so the night runs smoothly.

Give a real, final-ish number

Large tables are a restaurant's tightest resource. Book the number you truly expect, and update it as soon as it firms up. "Eight, maybe twelve" forces the host to gamble — and a wrong gamble means a cramped table or a held one that sat half-empty.

Ask about the group policies up front

Set menus: many restaurants use a prix-fixe for larger parties — ask so nobody's surprised.
Deposits & auto-gratuity: common for big tables; know before you book.
Timing: groups take longer; an earlier seating gives the kitchen room.

Manage the arrival

Ask everyone to arrive together, or authorize the host to seat the group when most are there. Nothing snarls a floor like a twelve-top held for one guest who's parking. Leave the restaurant a good contact number — a text-native system means the host can reach you when the table's set.
